ABOUT US/CURRICULUM
HISTORY The school is a member of the National Christian School Association. We are also an associate member of Character Counts. We subscribe to the principles of love and logic expressed by the Cline Fay Institute.
SCA is a ministry of the Fairfield Church of Christ. The school began in 1977 and today serves students in pre-school through 8th grades.
CURRICULUM All K-8th grade students use science and social studies curricula created by The University of Virginia's Core Knowledge Foundation. Core Knowledge is a hands-on approach to teaching both science and social studies, utilizing classroom demonstrations, experimentation, discussions, and the use of historical literature. Students are encouraged to make their own connections and to understand scientific principles, historical figures, and civilizations in a holistic context that makes sense. This curricula works particularly well in a Christian school because students studying the Roman Empire or ancient civilizations may also learn about Paul's missionary journeys or how Pontius Pilate came to be governor of Judea at the time of Christ. Some of you may be familiar with E.D. Hirsch's series "What Your (insert appropriate grade) Child Needs to Know." These are available at Barnes and Noble and are also produced by the Core Knowledge Foundation. These books, and many other resources, are used as the basis for science and social studies. SCA uses Accelerated Reader materials, including the STAR Reading Assessment. All 2nd - 8th grade students receive individualized quarterly reading goals and book points which contribute to class and school goals. Research strongly supports the use of A.R. in improving not only children's fluency, but also comprehension.
As kindergarten and 1st-grade students gain the necessary independent reading skills to successfully pass the self-guided book quizzes, these students will also be included in the program. The young elementary children use templates to begin their projects, but in the later part of second grade the children design their own projects. The children also receive instruction in using file directories, WordArt, formatting graphics, using multiple panes, and performing research. The parents are invited to reinforce keyboard learning with their student at home by clicking here. __________________________________________________
MATHEMATICS
All K - 8th classrooms use mathematics materials published by Saxon Publishing. Saxon places equal emphasis on skill acquisition and understanding of the rationale behind each operation. So, not only does a 3rd grade student learn that 7 X 6 = 42, but the child also understands why and how this relates to pattern recognition, sets, and skip counting learned in earlier grades.
